Champions 12.3 Releases Second Annual Report to Assess Food Loss and Waste
Champions 12.3 has just released its second annual report to assess global progress toward the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3, adopted two years ago, which calls to halve food waste and reduce food loss by 2030.
In this latest publication, co-authored with WRI, Champions 12.3 concludes that while Target 12.3 is ambitious, it is achievable. The report outlines a pathway for achieving the Target and assesses global progress to date by countries and companies. To achieve Target 12.3 in the next 14 years, they advise that governments and companies must however move quickly, over the remaining 13 years, to set specific reduction targets, measure food loss and waste within their borders or supply chains, and deliver on policies and programmes that will reduce this inefficiency.
“The report we co-authored with WRI shows we are moving in the right direction, but we need to build momentum quickly. We need action from everyone from governments, businesses, NGOs and us all in our homes: uniting in the food waste fight”, said Marcus Gover, Chief Executive of WRAP. “It is also essential that developing nations get the financial support they need to tackle food loss and waste. We have gathering impetus, and now we have something which could help navigate us all to our destination. There is no time to lose”.
The report references positive actions of The Consumer Goods Forum, stating that it is “a good foundation for companies to jointly embark on the journey toward halving food loss and waste, share best practices, motivate one another, and collaborate on solutions.”
