PARIS, 28th September 2015 – The Consumer Goods Forum would like to welcome the publication of the Sustainable Development Goals. These goals provide an important roadmap for the sustainable world that mirror our own strategic objectives, and we are delighted to be representing consumer goods companies as enablers of this post 2015 development agenda.

As the only organisation bringing consumer goods retailers and manufacturers together globally, we fully appreciate the need for multi-sectoral and collaborative actions if we are to achieve these goals, and how global partnerships can bring about positive change. This is evident by the portfolio of programmes we are currently working on and that are covered within 10 of the Sustainable Development Goals.
 
Consumer Goods Forum calls on all members and businesses around the world to take action and show support to the post 2015 development agenda and leadership in its application. Only through multi-sectoral collaborations can we expect to have a sustained and positive impact on people and the planet.
 
We have played an instrumental role in developing mechanisms and partnerships to reach the goals (Goal 17), including being a founding member of the Tropical Forest Alliance 2020 and our involvement in the Banking Environment Initiative. Our work on the continuous improvement of working and environmental conditions, through the Global Social Compliance Programme (GSCP), has led to us being an active contributor to numerous institutional-level discussions on harmonisation and CSR. We have represented the industry’s voluntary work on social issues in meetings such as the G7 Conference and the EU Multi-stakeholder Forum on CSR.
 
Our members are also actively committed to taking action on climate change (Goals 13) and taking care of the earth (Goal 15) through the implementation of our Board-approved Resolutions on phasing out harmful refrigerants, achieving zero-net deforestation and halving food waste within member operations. And, we are working towards improving nutrition (Goal 2) and the well-being of consumers and employees (Goal 3) through our work on health and wellness in the shape of Board Resolutions and Commitments.
 
The GSCP, working in an inclusive cross-sectoral and multi-stakeholder approach, covers many of the specific social and environmental issues raised by the Sustainable Development Goals - including poverty (Goal 1), decent work for all (Goal 8), responsible consumption (Goal 12), gender equality (Goal 5) and sustainable management of natural resources (Goal 6) - through the GSCP Reference Tools.
