Data-Driven Value Chains

Our current agenda is shaped by the opportunities presented by the industry’s new omni-channel and technology-enabled business models. We are, therefore, pursuing a two-part vision:

  • Information transparency – using information flows across the industry value chain to support both industry efficiency and consumer trust; and
  • Physical supply chain collaboration – adapting physical flows across the industry value chain to be more efficient and sustainable.

Our vision is for an industry in which trading partners have access to real-time, accurate and independently assured product and supply chain data down to item level; consumers can get accurate, on demand answers to the questions they have on the products they buy (e.g. ingredients, safety) and where they come from (e.g. origin, social & environmental impacts); and consumers also have confidence that the personal data they provide to companies will be reliably safeguarded and responsibly used.

We believe this will enable the industry to grow consumer trust at a time when societal trends and digital media are fuelling demand for greater transparency. At the same time we believe it will unlock significant cost savings for the industry by replacing inefficient traceability systems and helping to reduce waste.

And, we are also working towards a vision whereby industry players collaborate wherever possible to reduce waste, including replacing our current reliance on secondary packaging with a standardised system of reusable crates, adapted for automated warehousing and new omni-channel business models; more sharing of logistics activities between companies to maximise truck and warehouse utilisation; and we believe this will enable the industry to reduce both costs and the environmental impact of new business models.

Member-Driven Solutions

A key component of this initiative is our member-driven projects. With an emphasis on overcoming the biggest challenges facing our industry along the value chain – be it improving on traceability and product safety through interoperability and big data, eliminating waste in the supply chain or maintaining consumer trust – our projects have the power to shape our industry for years to come.

E2E deals with all things that ‘move’ in a supply chain, be it a consumer item, a truck transporting pallets or data channelled to the device of a consumer or exchanged between business partners. In order to achieve our objectives, it’s our belief that companies need to find new ways to collect and share data as well as collaborate on pre-competitive areas throughout the supply chain – with each other and with consumers – in a world where poor data handling, packaging waste and outmoded technologies lead to spiralling costs and inefficiencies that can span an entire supply chain.

Our members understand that data is intrinsic to business success today, whether it’s knowing what ingredients are in a product, how many cartons are in a delivery truck or whether a consumer clearly understands what you are doing with the personal data you are collecting. However, beyond data, our Pillar is also looking to address increasing consumer concerns about packaging waste and the expanding role of enabling technology, such as warehouse robotics. And so, while removing system complexities (modularisation) may appear a tactical opportunity, evidence shows us the business sense, helping companies to become more efficient and cost-effective.
