Working together to accelerate progress towards a circular economy
As a group of 28 leaders in the manufacturing and retailing of packaged goods, we recognise the urgent need to address the challenge of packaging waste, especially the critical issue of plastic pollution, through both our collective and individual actions. The scale of the challenge is now well documented, but as our understanding of the problem has grown, so has our clarity on the role we need to play in helping to shape efficient and effective solutions to packaging waste. We know that improving the performance of waste management and recycling systems is an important part of progressing towards a world where no packaging ends up in nature. This requires new thinking, collaboration and financing.
We understand that many public policy makers in markets around the world are looking for solutions, including Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging. As the endorsing companies under the umbrella of the CGF’s Plastic Waste Coalition of Action, we have come together to develop an aligned industry position on the optimal design of such EPR programmes. Seeking long-lasting solutions to building better funded systems that are convenient for consumers and unlock strong environmental outcomes, we believe that well designed EPR programmes for packaging can be such a solution.
The overarching principles of optimal EPR programmes are:
We have co-developed a set of guidelines for EPR programmes aligned to these goals, which we look to foster in markets around the world when such programmes are being pursued or developed, and take a proactive stance across our industry to deliver constructive and harmonised recommendations in markets where we operate.
