The Consumer Goods Forum’s (CGF) Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative (SSCI) is pleased to announce a major milestone in its global mission to build trust in sustainability standards worldwide. Florverde® Sustainable Flowers (FSF) has become the first certification scheme to apply for benchmarking against the SSCI’s Environmental Benchmark Criteria. This is a landmark moment that reinforces the SSCI’s role as an industry solution, uniquely positioned to help businesses embrace the full spectrum of sustainability, from social to environmental responsibility.
This application marks a significant achievement not only for FSF but for the SSCI community at large, demonstrating growing industry alignment around a holistic approach to sustainability – one that integrates people and planet.
Today, more than 7,000 hectares in Colombia and Ecuador are certified under FSF, while grower groups in Nicaragua and Peru are preparing to begin the certification process. As the world’s floriculture industry – valued at over 55 billion USD – continues to grow, FSF’s leadership sets a powerful example of how environmental and social performance go hand in hand.
“This is a breakthrough moment for the SSCI,” said Didier Bergeret, Director of Sustainability at The Consumer Goods Forum. “Welcoming our first applicant under the environmental benchmark reinforces the SSCI’s position as an industry solution — helping companies address the full spectrum of sustainability, from social and environmental responsibility.”
Already recognised under the SSCI Social Compliance Benchmark, FSF’s application under the environmental criteria reinforces its long-standing commitment to sustainable floriculture — ensuring that flowers are grown under standards that protect biodiversity, workers, and local communities.
Daniela España, Director of Florverde® Sustainable Flowers, said, “Having already achieved SSCI recognition for our social standard, we are now taking the next step toward environmental recognition. We are proud to be the first certification scheme in the floriculture industry to apply for this benchmark because we believe in initiatives like the SSCI of The Consumer Goods Forum, which promote trust, transparency and fairness across the entire floriculture value chain.”
Developed through multi-stakeholder consultation, the SSCI’s Environmental Benchmark Criteria will apply to schemes and programmes working in the Manufacturing & Processing; Primary Production; and Forestry sectors. It defines the minimum industry requirements when it comes to environmental sustainability.
