Fairtrade International, a global organisation representing about 2 million farmers and workers worldwide, has applied for recognition under the Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative’s (SSCI) primary production and manufacturing and processing scopes.
Known globally for promoting human rights, living wages, and climate resilience, Fairtrade sets farm-level standards and runs independent certification for smallholders, contract producers, and hired labour. Fairtrade’s certification programme is now undergoing SSCI benchmarking for both social and environmental criteria simultaneously.
The SSCI evaluates certification programmes against a consistent global baseline. This benchmarking process provides consumer goods companies with a verified benchmark to evaluate sustainability standards. One of the key steps of this process is a public consultation of Fairtrade International’s benchmarking report that was produced after the office visit.
Why this step matters
By opening Fairtrade’s assessment to peer review from industry experts and buyers, the SSCI ensures that all findings are thoroughly stress-tested. This transparent process offers consumer goods companies information they can trust, giving procurement teams, manufacturers, and retailers a clear look into the performance of one of the world’s leading ethical marks.
