The Consumer Goods Forum publishes new best practice note on respecting human rights defenders in global supply chains

The new resource outlines practical ways that consumer goods companies can support the rights of these vulnerable people in corporate due diligence processes.

The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) has published a new best practice note for multinational brands and retailers on how they can support respect for Human Rights Defenders (Defenders) in their supply chains.

The CGF’s Forest Positive (FPC) and Human Rights (HRC) Coalitions of Action have developed this new Best Practice Note for Business on Human Rights Defenders, aiming to inform continuous improvement measures to respect Defenders in line with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

With insights from stakeholders, the note provides suggestions on due diligence processes.  It recommends the implementation of preventative measures and practical ways for companies to embed Defender protections into their existing human rights due diligence processes, such as grievance mechanisms and supplier engagement processes, to help identify risks early and address them effectively.

Didier Bergeret, Sustainability Director at The Consumer Goods Forum said, “Human Rights Defenders play a crucial role in raising awareness of social and environmental issues in the supply chain, making them a much-needed source of information for responsible businesses, who need to identify and address potential issues in their supply chains.

We hope that this note will serve as helpful inspiration to a wide variety of companies along the consumer goods value chain.
