The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) is pleased to announce a strategic evolution in our collaborative efforts: What was formerly known as “The Product Data Coalition” and the “End-to-End Value Chain & Standards Committee” have now officially merged and evolved into The Data-Driven Value Chain (DDVC).
A Unified Approach for Tangible Results
By bringing together these two, the DDVC offers a clear, unified path for the industry to streamline operations, gain deeper insights through the power of data, technology, and AI, and accelerate collaborative and pre-competitive supply chain optimization, automation, and innovation.
The DDVC aims to be a central force in helping businesses, from manufacturers to retailers, work together to build foundational data infrastructure, accelerate innovation and provide clear, voluntary guiding principles for responsible use of data, technology and AI.
Members can expect clear, high-level analyses of emerging technologies, a simpler understanding of data requirements, and new solutions designed to drive better decisions and productivity gains.
Key Workstreams Driving Progress
Our current workstreams focus on vital areas designed to deliver real impact:
- QR Code Implementation & Consumer Experience: This initiative aims to facilitate the industry’s transition to QR codes by 2027 to elevate consumer engagement, adhering to the Global Standards. Discussions include defining essential data elements and ensuring a positive and consistent consumer experience.
- AI Adoption & Application: Given the rapidly evolving nature of AI, this workstream focuses on knowledge sharing, identifying best practices, and facilitating collaboration between domain experts and AI technologists.
- Simplify Sustainability Data Exchange (formerly ESG Data Exchange): This addresses the complexity of diverse and often inconsistent ESG data requirements. The goal is to work towards standardization and interoperability, simplifying sustainability data exchange through a phased approach, with an eye towards measurable improvements in data consistency and reporting ease.
- Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) Management: In collaboration with GS1 Global, this workstream aims to develop or pilot best practices to simplify the documentation, handling, and management of Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) licenses, especially for companies navigating complex mergers and acquisitions (M&A), splits, and divestments.
Looking Ahead: DDVC In-Person Committee Meeting In Amsterdam
To ensure continuous progress for the DDVC’s work, our committee recently held its inaugural in-person meeting of the year in Amsterdam. This pivotal gathering took place just before its official re-establishment under the new mandate and ahead of the CGF Global Summit. The meeting was dedicated to translating our unified vision into immediate, actionable progress for the industry.
We made significant strides, focusing on practical advancements and collaborative efforts that will drive real progress across the value chain. Here’s a quick recap of key takeaways:
- Innovation Deep Dive: We kicked off the day with a visit to Hanshow Technologies, gaining firsthand insights into cutting-edge in-store retail solutions – from Smart Carts to Electronic Shop Labels and Green Store Solutions – demonstrating how future-ready technologies can enhance efficiency and consumer experience.
- Driving 2D Code Adoption: We then immersed ourselves in the “Heineken Experience,” gaining practical insights into the real-world application of 2D barcodes (QR codes) on packaging. This directly supports our initiative to facilitate the industry’s transition to QR codes by 2027, focusing on defining essential data elements and ensuring a positive, consistent consumer experience, all while adhering to GS1 standards.
- Driving AI & Sustainability Forward: Our recent committee discussions highlighted two key areas: AI Adoption & Application and Simplifying Sustainability Data Exchange. We are committed to leading knowledge sharing, identifying best practices, and fostering collaboration in AI.
For sustainability, we are actively standardizing and improving the exchange of complex ESG data to promote interoperability and reduce complexity for all participants. Sharon Bligh, CGF Climate Transition Director, emphasized the critical need for clear, actionable ESG data, guiding our next steps. To further this, the DDVC ESG Data Working Group will directly collaborate with the Climate Transition Coalition’s Common Data Framework group, aiming to boost sustainability data consistency and simplify reporting for all.
This meeting underscores our unwavering commitment to delivering tangible progress and collaborative solutions that directly impact your operations.
Stay tuned for exciting updates coming soon!
