The Challenge

  • The carbon footprints of the products sold by Migros Ticaret constitute the largest proportion of the company’s Scope 3 emissions. For this reason, it was crucial to work together with its suppliers to quantify their current emissions and to set and achieve reduction targets.

  • The diversity of suppliers and varying levels of maturity made tracking carbon emissions across the supply chain complex.

  • Lack of knowledge and capacity among suppliers regarding sustainability was a significant barrier to achieving shared goals.

The Approach

  • To monitor and reduce indirect emissions in the value chain, Migros established the “Sustainable Business Partners Network,” fostering long-term, sustainability-focused collaborations with its suppliers.

  • The project included critical suppliers representing 80% of turnover, as well as private label product manufacturers.

  • Within the scope of the Sustainable Business Partners Network, a portal was designed to enable suppliers to measure their carbon footprint. Additionally, sustainability trainings, carbon footprint measurement trainings, and best-practice sharing sessions were organized.

  • A supplier sustainability scorecard was developed to monitor performance and identify areas for improvement.

“Sustainability only succeeds when every partner can participate with confidence. Through our Sustainable Business Partners Network, we’ve focused on closing the knowledge gap—offering practical trainings and a digital portal for footprint measurement. Together, we’re maturing our supply chain’s capabilities and embedding measurable progress. By standardizing data, building supplier capability, and tracking performance, we’re turning Scope 3 ambition into measurable action across our value chain.”

The Results

  • In 2024, approximately 100 supplier company employees received training and were guided through calculations via the Sustainable Business Partners Network platform.

  • In 2024, 150 suppliers measured their carbon emissions and shared the results on the digital platform.

  • The project aims to regularly monitor environmental parameters such as carbon emissions, water consumption, and waste amounts, track suppliers’ climate-related targets, and support their target-setting processes.

  • Migros Ticaret developed a model for supplier collaboration, setting an example for achieving sustainability goals together.
