Environmental Footprinting in Retail: the need for consistent methodology & supply chain data
To analyse and compare the environmental performance of a food product in retail, a consistent life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology and high-quality supply chain data are necessary to enable fair and realistic comparisons of food products.
Blonk, a Mérieux NutriSciences company, collaborated with Foundation Earth to develop a harmonized LCA method aligned with the European Commission’s PEF, addressing aspects such as system boundaries, functional units, data quality, and calculation rules. In parallel, Blonk and Albert Heijn created an automated LCA tool to consistently gather farm data, thereby advancing environmental footprint analysis.
During this session, Blonk will present their work on harmonizing LCA methodology and share Albert Heijn’s sustainability ambitions and experiences with farm-level data collection.

The pressing need to address environmental issues caused by plastic waste is urgent. With 95% of plastic packaging designed for single use and global packaging production increasing, a lot more has to be done. The United Nations Environmental Programme warns that around 60% of the 8.3 billion tonnes of plastics produced since the 1950s end up in landfills or the natural environment. The visible and alarming 8-12 million tonnes of plastic litter entering the ocean annually underscores this problem. Collaborative action is essential, and the CGF is well-positioned to drive change towards a circular economy. Join us as we discuss strategies and solutions to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable and circular future. Panelists will explore the transformative concepts of re-use and refill and showcase their potential for reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
