The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF), in partnership with Bain & Company, hosted a roundtable on advancing green consumption at the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) on Thursday 6 November 2025 in Hongqiao, Shanghai. The event brought together Mr. Wei Liu, Second-Class Inspector of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, along with representatives from the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment, the Shanghai Pudong Expo Administration Bureau, and the Shanghai Foreign Investment Association.

The roundtable also welcomed senior executives from more than 20 local and international consumer goods companies, including Bailian Group, Yum! China, Procter & Gamble, M&G Stationery, DFI Retail Group, Danone, TCI, Ferrero, Sun Art Retail, Haitian Flavoring & Food, Henkel, HotMaxx, Zespri, Goldhongye, Master Kong, Tetra Pak, Unilever, Lianhua Supermarket, MDL Commerce Group Co., Ltd., Mengniu Group, Nestlé, OATLY, FamilyMart, Walmart, IKEA, and Zhong Run Chang Jiang.

Shaohua Pu, President of Bailian Group, CGF Global Board Member and CGF China Board Co-Chair, welcomed participants and highlighted progress under the China Green Transition Initiative (GTI):
“Through our localized Green Transition Initiative and three-year action plan, we have garnered support from nearly 30 leading international and local consumer goods enterprises. At Bailian Group, several shopping malls have completed low-carbon renovations, reducing annual power consumption by over 20%. We will continue deepening zero-carbon collaboration with industry peers to jointly drive the high-quality growth of green consumption.”

Yang Liu, Expert Partner at Bain & Company, shared insights into consumer trends around sustainability:
“Sustainability is not a fleeting social trend, but a structural shift. When promoting sustainable consumption, enterprises need to ensure their products are inherently competitive. Consumers will not continue to pay a ‘green premium’ in the long run unless this premium delivers superior value. Therefore, the direction of innovation should be to continuously iterate across dimensions such as price, performance, design, and experience, creating products that offer no compromise.”

The roundtable reinforced CGF China’s commitment to connecting brands, suppliers, and retailers, and promoting green consumption as a driver of sustainable growth across the consumer goods sector.
