On 17th October 2018, Environmental Sustainability Director Ignacio Gavilan spoke at a conference organised by EuroCommerce, entitled “Circular Economy – Scaling up Market Solutions in Retail and Wholesale”. Speakers and delegates discussed how retail & wholesale businesses can work together with government and others in the supply chain to achieve a circular economy. The main message was the need for cooperation in giving value to resources that otherwise would have been discarded, and making this a part of normal business models. This is not just about waste management, but designing products and systems to prevent waste from the outset.

Ignacio spoke on a panel about curbing food waste alongside Veronika Pountcheva from METRO, Dr Richard Swannell from WRAP, Bertrand Swiderski, Carrefour Group and Lucie Basch from Too Good To Go. The panellists spoke about consumer education, the urgency to start delivering on SDG 12.3, the need for all actors to work collectively and consciously on this issue, as well as the need for research on technologies that will help to increase product shelf life.
