29th September 2025 – On the occasion of the International Day of Food Loss and Waste, The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF), through its Food Waste Coalition of Action, has published “Inspiring Consumers to Waste Less Food: Best Practices for Retailers and Manufacturers,” a new guide designed to help companies engage consumers in reducing food waste.
Aligned with SDG 12.3 to halve food waste by 2030, the publication highlights the critical role of consumer engagement in meeting global targets. While retailers and manufacturers are making progress in reducing waste across operations and supply chains, influencing behaviour at the consumer level remains a vital challenge — and opportunity.
Developed from insights shared during the Coalition’s Consumer Engagement Showcase Sessions, the guide distills learnings from member companies’ real-world campaigns into practical recommendations. Contributors to the publication include leading consumer goods companies such as Ahold Delhaize USA, Bel Group, Danone, Grupo Bimbo, Kerry Group, Tesco, and Walmart, with Bel and Walmart who also serve as Co-Chairs of the Coalition, who shared their experiences and innovative approaches to consumer engagement.
The guide offers:
- Messaging strategies and framing techniques to encourage behaviour change
- Case studies showing how companies have successfully engaged consumers
- Creative activation ideas using packaging, loyalty programmes, in-store visibility and digital tools
- Guidance on monitoring impact to capture learnings and improve over time
The publication underscores that no single approach will fit all markets. Instead, it presents flexible best practices that can be adapted to different geographies, audiences, and business models.
By embracing these strategies, companies can not only reduce post-purchase food waste but also build stronger consumer trust and complement broader industry efforts to minimise food loss across the value chain.
