The Food Waste Coalition launches practical guidance to support food waste measurement and reduction
The Consumer Goods Forum’s (CGF) Food Waste Coalition of Action has launched its new Practical Guide to Corporate Reporting on Food Waste, a resource designed to help food retailers and manufacturers strengthen their food waste measurement, reporting and reduction efforts.
The guide provides practical direction on how companies can consistently measure and report food waste. A key feature of the resource is its clear overview of the Target, Measure, Act framework, standards, definitions and tools that underpin food waste reporting, helping companies navigate a complex reporting landscape and adopt best practices.
In the second part of the guide, the Coalition has also developed sector-specific reporting guidance for retailers and manufacturers, providing best practice recommendations on reporting scope, food waste metrics and quantification approaches. The guidance aims to improve consistency and transparency in food waste reporting, enabling companies to better track progress and benchmark progress.
The guidance complements the Coalition’s recently released Progress Report, Towards the 2030 Food Waste Commitment: Tracking Progress and Action Against the Baseline, which found that participating member companies have achieved a 22% reduction in food waste intensity compared to their 2023 baseline year. By helping companies strengthen the way they measure and report food waste, the new resources support more consistent tracking of progress and reinforce the role of robust data as a foundation for meaningful action towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3, which aims to halve global food waste by 2030.
These resources are designed to accelerate the adoption of consistent reporting practices and support greater collaboration across the food value chain.
The guide is now available to help companies strengthen their food waste reporting and drive further progress towards a more sustainable food system.
