Our new Health & Wellness Pillar China Steering Committee kick-off meeting took place on 3rd April in Shanghai. 13 representatives from Bright Dairy, Carrefour, Ele.me, PepsiCo, Mars, McDonald’s, Mengniu Dairy, METRO, New Hope Liuhe, and Walmart attended the meeting to set up the core leadership team to implement the Pillar’s actions in China and get more CGF member companies involved.

Presentations of the participating companies’ health and wellness efforts provided the opportunity for knowledge and best practice sharing. Joining the meeting remotely, Sharon Bligh, Director of the CGF’s Health & Wellness Pillar, gave an overall introduction of the initiative, including the global steering committee, 2023 goals, and a roadmap for implementation.

One of the CGF’s Health & Wellness partners, Oliver Wyman, were invited to introduce the Collaboration for Healthier Lives (CHL) initiative playbook that they developed in collaboration with the CGF, as well as present a detailed overview of CHL in other regions.

Together with Oliver Wyman, leading up to the end of the month of April, the CGF China team conducted several in-depth research interviews with members, including Bright Dairy, Carrefour, Ele.me, METRO, PepsiCo, and Walmart. The feedback from the interviews laid a good foundation for preparations for the CHL China project design workshop the following month.

On 11th May, the CGF China team together with Carrefour organised the 2019 Carrefour China National Nutrition Week event and the 2019 CGF China Health & Wellness Workshop in Beijing. National Nutrition Week is a major national event in which the Chinese Dietary Guidelines are used as a basis to increase public awareness towards a healthy diet and lifestyle, this year under the theme “Fruit and Vegetables Every Day Keep the Doctor Away”.

During this key week, the CGF China also launched the “One for Good” movement campaign together with Carrefour in Beijing Siyuanqiao. One for Good shopping gift bags were provided to customers and event participants to promote consumption of fruits and vegetables. In addition, shelves with vegetable items were set up near the checkout zone and an express checkout lane was made available for the customers who had fruits and vegetables in their shopping carts.

The CGF China Health & Wellness Workshop was also held in Beijing’s Carrefour Siyuanqiao store, with around 30 stakeholders and member company representatives in attendance. Representatives from the China Nutrition Society, China Nutrition and Health Food Association, and China Children and Teenagers Fund joined the workshop and expressed their expectations for future collaboration with the CGF China Health & Wellness efforts.

One of the key purposes of the workshop was to officially announce the launch of the Health & Wellness Pillar in China, while another main goal was to focus on the development of the CHL initiative – the main focus of the Health & Wellness Pillar in China for the year. The discussion on CHL China, moderated by Oliver Wyman, allowed for the opportunity to identify and align main issues of for CHL China and co-build interventions and touchpoints. All representatives voted to provide directional support in refining the project proposal, which will be done by the CGF in collaboration with Oliver Wyman.

Commenting on this progress, Pauline HARPER, Acting Director of the CGF’s Health & Wellness Pillar, said, “Health and wellness is top of mind across the globe with adequate nutrition, obesity and noncommunicable disease prevention a priority on agendas for authorities, communities and citizens. At the CGF’s Health & Wellness Pillar, we are focusing our attention on how we can help people make better choices in their diets to live healthier lives. We have launched CHL, a collective movement to empower consumers to make these healthier choices, in 8 countries across the world: Colombia, Costa Rica, Turkey, USA, UK, France, Japan and now China! We are encouraged by our members’ support and the reception this movement is receiving in the communities. Our aim is to replicate our successes and scale up to empower more communities to make healthier choices for healthier lifestyles, with results by 2023.”

Jing REN, Director of Carrefour China Institute for Food Safety, Nutrition, Health and Laboratories, said, “I’m very pleased that the CGF has launched the Health & Wellness Pillar and set up the Steering Committee structure in China. Carrefour China is very happy to be involved in this pillar and it is our honour to co-host the 2019 CGF China H&W Workshop. As members of the global CHL initiative, Carrefour China is also very happy to be one of the founding members of CHL China. We look forward to working with the CGF China team to promote the development of the initiative.”

Yangying XU, General Manager of the CGF China, said, Based on the six-year development of the Global Food Safety Initiative in China, the CGF China is pleased to launch the Health & Wellness Pillar this year. We are also very grateful for Carrefour China’s strong support.
