The CGF Director of Environmental Sustainability, Ignacio Gavilan, is one of four food waste experts comprising the jury of the EU-wide REFRESH Food Waste Solution Contest. Ignacio, alongside the panel of jurists, will be announcing the winners of the contest at the REFRESH Conference on 18th May 2017 in Berlin.

The REFRESH Food Waste Solution Contest was developed to highlight and support solutions to food waste and food packaging waste along the food chain. Hundreds of innovative food waste solution submissions were received with one winner being decided by public vote and two selected by the jury. All three winners will receive prizes and recognition during the REFRESH Conference.

The CGF is proud to be involved in an initiative that encourages innovation and knowledge exchange among key actors in the global fight against food loss and waste. Continuous collaboration is necessary to achieve measurable reductions in food loss and waste and, through initiatives such as the FLW Protocol, best practice sharing through the CGF’s Food Waste Case Study Booklet and Sustainable Retail Summit, the REFRESH contest and others, these essential reductions can successfully be achieved.

About the Contest

Across Europe, people are developing and implementing innovative solutions to the problem of food waste. The REFRESH Food Waste Solution Contest wants to bring much-deserved recognition to these ideas and encourage their spread. Anyone that has developed a food waste innovation – including individuals, organisations, start-ups and large companies – was eligible to submit a video or visual essay about their project.

Winners will be chosen by a high-profile jury of food waste leaders from science, business, civil society and the EU Commission, Winners will receive prizes, including the opportunity to participate in a Food Waste Innovation incubator event hosted by Food Surplus Entrepreneurs Network as a side event of the REFRESH Conference in Berlin in May 2017.

REFRESH focuses on the reduction of avoidable waste and improved valorisation of food resources. Backed by research to better understand the drivers of food waste, the project supports better decision-making by industry and individual consumers. The project takes an innovative, systemic approach to curb food waste through a holistic “Framework for Action”. REFRESH builds on and goes beyond existing initiatives to develop, evaluate, and ensure the spread of social, technological, and organisational insights and practices related to food waste. This is underpinned with guidance to legislators and policy makers to help support effective governance to tackle food waste.
