Inspiring Healthier Lives

We are calling on members and stakeholders to show their commitment to helping solve today’s most important health and wellness challenges by acting together in the Collaboration for Healthier Lives (CHL) UK initiative. Officially launched in March 2019, the initiative kicked off in the London boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark, which are home to 600,000 residents and over 200 grocery stores, and has now expanded nationwide.

Under the stewardship of Tesco and Danone CEOs, CHL UK is a purpose-driven collaboration that brings together a coalition of members from The Consumer Goods Forum alongside key local stakeholders – including public health authorities, academics, local actors and government figures – to drive behavioural change and positively impact consumer health in the region. It aims to collectively develop a series of structural and behavioural interventions – both in-store and through digital channels – to help customers and employees understand, find and choose healthier options, while also ensuring shared business value.

Companies that have already confirmed their support include: Ahold-Delhaize, Haleon, J&J Consumer Health, M&S, Mars Incorporated, Nestle S.A., PepsiCo, P&G, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and The Coca-Cola Company among others. This initiative is supported by Impact for Urban Health and the University of Oxford.

The Challenge to be Tackled

Almost two-thirds of adults and one-in-five children aged 10-11 in the UK are overweight or obese. Treating obesity puts a huge strain on society. Children are consuming around three times more sugar than is recommended by the government and only a quarter of adults achieve their 5-a-day recommended portions of fruit and vegetables. Other issues the initiative aims to address include smoking, the leading cause of preventable illness and premature death in the UK, and oral hygiene.

The CHL UK Journey

The CGF looks forward to driving healthier behaviours in the UK and appreciates the support of its members and external stakeholders. Success will be measured by the increase in consumption of healthier categories and impact of the interventions throughout participating stores, which will be independently verified by the CGF’s academic partner. It is a live, test-and-learn collaboration, enabling real-time analysis of the potential social impacts of structural and behavioural interventions, which will help CGF members develop new ways of doing business. Such insights can also be fed back to UK Governmental bodies to inform wider efforts to drive behavioural change and nudge consumers towards healthier options.

The CGF is thrilled to be collaborating with such a diverse range of stakeholders to identify which interventions will help consumers make healthier choices and welcomes others to join this unprecedented coalition. This is the power of The Consumer Goods Forum and its commitment to implementing positive change.

Driving Healthier & More Sustainable Lifestyles

The CGF and IGD, working with the food and consumer goods industry, have a shared ambition to help consumers adopt healthier and more sustainable diets.

Now more than ever, healthy, and sustainable diets are at the forefront of business and public agendas and have become an urgent priority for communities across the globe.

For many years, The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) and IGD have worked on respective projects to drive positive change in the consumer goods industry and for the people they serve worldwide. Through its Collaboration for Healthier Lives (CHL) Coalition, the CGF drives collaborative action to make it easier for consumers to adopt healthier lifestyles for themselves and their families; while IGD convenes stakeholders across the food and consumer goods industry to address the economic, social and environmental issues that matter to us all, driving tangible change to deliver social impact.

The parallels are clear. The common CGF-IGD ambition to facilitate healthier and more sustainable choices for people around the world offers a valuable opportunity to amplify efforts to drive industry collaboration, build knowledge, and share learnings.

By leveraging their respective resources, insight, and networks, the CGF and IGD aim to not only continue to raise awareness, but also drive tangible actions and inspire change – tackling some of the most critical health and sustainability issues facing the industry and world today.
