What We Do
It’s that time of year when we start to think about how we can take more healthier steps in our lives and in the lives of our consumers around the world. At The Consumer Goods Forum, we want to work with our members to find new ways to leverage the store environment and digital platforms to inspire people around the world, focusing on behavior change and playing a key role in supporting healthier lifestyles.
Our global ambition is to empower consumers and employees to live healthier lives and build proof points of business as a force for good. We are bringing this alive locally through our Collaboration for Healthier Lives initiatives.
In the US, we are working under the ‘One For Good’ umbrella to collaborate with Healthy Washington County, driving the initiative to take small but lasting steps towards a healthier lifestyle. The elements of working together help us to learn from others and we hope in time to have a positive impact on the community.
Lots has happened in Hagerstown at the beginning of the year. We shared our ’One for Good’ message at the Hub City 100 Miler launch event, an initiative that challenges the community to get up and get going. The idea is that people can join the challenge of walking 100 miles in 100 days. The teams at all our participating stores worked hard to ensure they shared a common message: making small choices for good habits can add up to a big impact.
At Walmart, for example, the team held a wellness day offering free health screenings to help individuals uncover existing health problems, including high blood pressure, signs of diabetes, oral hygiene and others.
To help educate shoppers about nutrition during the wellness day, PepsiCo is sponsoring Cooking Matters at the Store nutrition education tours at the Hagerstown Walmart. Cooking Matters is an organisation that helps families to shop for and cook healthy meals on a budget, to provide customers with healthy, affordable and delicious cooking tips. Walmart stores also had a dedicated space organised by Johnson & Johnson where they displayed their official 7-minute workout, encouraging people to live an active lifestyle and demonstrating that working out can be fast, simple, anywhere and anytime.
The team at Target helped their guests with healthier recipes and suggestions for healthier alternatives by doing in-store demonstrations and providing samples for healthier products.
At Walgreens Boots, the team provided health screenings for diabetes and blood pressure.
They also had a cough & cold stand where experts provided advice and flu shots to those who needed them.
Visitors were able to take part in in-store raffles and gained digital rewards for their healthier behaviours. There were lots of convenient ways to make healthy choices!
All three Martin’s stores in Hagerstown supported the ‘One for Good’ campaign with “Eating Healthy on a Budget” and “Healthy Kids” initiatives.
The team were also present at the Hub City 100 Miler to share what was happening at the stores and how people could all make one more healthy choice.
The learnings from the US initiative will be shared with the Collaboration for Healthier Lives (CHL) teams in Colombia, Japan, Costa Rica and the UK, where we are planning similar partnerships.
Everyone who is part of this community engagement is encouraging friends and family to make one more healthy choice, which is why we are so excited about the possibilities. Join the movement and help us spread the message that there’s a choice to be made. In fact, there are thousands of little choices to be made every day that greatly impact our health. Deciding to park farther away from the entrance to get a few extra steps in; choosing a healthier snack to keep you going; or taking an extra minute at bedtime to floss. The good news is that getting started down the road to a healthier life is easier than ever before — the first step is one more healthy choice.
