Since 2021, Mondelēz has used Satelligence’s satellite monitoring technology for deforestation and peat grievance tracking. Satelligence has supported in building a system which monitors all palm oil concessions in their supply chain whilst also being able to monitor mills on Global Forest Watch (an open-source web app to monitor forests in real time).

Mondelēz has built additional verification/ assurance systems covering 90% of palm mills, including 100% coverage in Indonesia and Malaysia. When alerts are detected, this kick-starts a “Suspend and Engage” process for the mill in question. Suppliers are engaged to collaborate and remediate the issue. Once remediated, a re-integration assessment is completed to ensure the supplier is operating in line with Mondelēz’s forest positive palm oil commitments.

This year, Mondelēz is working with Satelligence to develop an integrated grievance tracker. Due to the complex nature of supply chains, a single grievance is often linked to many upstream actors. This results in many grievances filed against different companies, requiring further investigation before re-entering the supply chain. The integrated grievance tracker aims to simplify this process so Mondelēz can more effectively track open grievances. As of 2023 reporting, Mondelez has been able to monitor ~88% of the total palm volume it sources for deforestation and peat monitoring aligned to CGF’s Monitoring and Response Framework. You can read more about this here.
